Microsoft has launched Xbox Labs, a new internal division comprising game developers, engineers, and scientists tasked with experimenting with AI-assisted software reverse engineering. Led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the initiative aims to build tools in the open that leverage artificial intelligence models to decompile, recompile, and port video games to non-native environments.

The effort follows a surge in community-driven modding projects, which have used AI and modern web standards to decouple game software from specific hardware constraints. Recent projects have successfully translated Windows PC game builds to run natively on Apple Silicon or inside web browsers utilizing WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter of which is now approaching 90% global browser support. These techniques have previously enabled unexpected cross-franchise experiments, such as porting Halo into a web browser or introducing skateboarding mechanics into Call of Duty.

Microsoft views game software as an ideal testing ground for autonomous AI agents, drawing direct parallels to how AI models were first deployed to write, run, and test standard source code. Sharma highlighted the scale of the domain, noting that players spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games—approximately five times the total time spent writing code worldwide. The new division aims to harness these agentic workflows to give classic titles new life and simplify cross-platform accessibility.

For developers and industry practitioners, Xbox Labs represents an official attempt to formalize and share experimental toolsets for software porting and modding. Microsoft plans to share its discoveries and software tools across the broader development ecosystem. While the initiative challenges traditional hardware-bound software business models, Xbox management maintains that its existing commitments to core gaming hardware and intellectual property stewardship remain unchanged.
