Shopify lets any AI agent buy from its catalog
Shopify has expanded access to its catalog of over a billion products, allowing shoppers to use any AI agent to automatically browse and execute purchases via Shop Pay.

Shopify announced Tuesday that it is expanding its agentic commerce capabilities by allowing consumers to configure any third-party AI agent to purchase items on their behalf. The shift removes the requirement for custom partnership integrations, giving autonomous tools direct access to search and purchase from Shopify's catalog of over a billion listings across both on-platform and off-platform storefronts.
To utilize the system, buyers connect their preferred AI assistant to their existing account on Shop, Shopify's centralized platform for order management and product discovery. Purchases occur directly within the conversational interface using the company's one-click Shop Pay checkout tool, with all completed orders synced back to the Shop application. While shoppers can establish customized rules, such as capping maximum budgets or prioritizing listings with fast delivery options, the setup still mandates explicit human approval for every final transaction.
The platform previously limited agentic purchasing to select integrations, having partnered with Meta in September to allow its Muse assistant to shop on behalf of users. By transitioning to an open-access model, Shopify is positioning its merchant network at the center of the growing battle over automated commerce. Big tech competitors like Google and Amazon are similarly developing agentic buying features, though Amazon has faced friction with independent AI firms including Perplexity and Meta over whether external bots should be permitted to make autonomous purchases.
For developers and commerce practitioners, Shopify's strategy lowers the barrier to deploying transaction-capable assistants without negotiating individual vendor agreements. Storefront owners automatically gain exposure to machine-driven purchasing flows, shifting the practical focus of e-commerce optimization from human visual browsing to machine-readable query resolution and programmatic intent fulfillment.
