Anthropic Adds Real-Time Midterm Election Data to Claude
Anthropic is integrating live voting data and enhanced safety filters into Claude ahead of the 2026 US midterms to combat bias and thwart coordinated online influence campaigns.

Anthropic has unveiled expanded election safeguards ahead of the 2026 US midterms, integrating direct voting information and live results into Claude.ai via Democracy Works. An analysis using Anthropic Insights on 250,000 US consumer conversations from September 21 to 27, 2026, found that 5.75% involved broad political or policy topics, 0.51% specifically addressed elections, 0.01% asked how to vote, and 0.002% violated election integrity policies.
The organization reported that its Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Haiku 5.5 models scored 99% on political evenhandedness tests. Independent reviews by the Future of Free Speech, the Foundation for American Innovation, and the Collective Intelligence Project—which gathered feedback from over 2,000 participants in the US, UK, and India—helped refine model responses. The feedback addressed issues identified in older systems like Claude Sonnet 4.5, which sometimes showed uneven hedging on conservative arguments or added unsolicited counterarguments to user prompts.
Safety stress tests conducted with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and the McCain Institute across the US, Israel, and Brazil revealed that while Claude blocked individual abusive requests, multi-step operations could occasionally avoid detection. Consequently, Anthropic introduced specialized classifiers to detect multi-stage misuse, foreign influence operations—including foreign operators attempting to generate coverage advancing Russian, Iranian, and North Korean narratives—and financial schemes designed to monetize election misinformation.
For developers, political campaigns, and policy researchers, these updates establish precise operational boundaries. While campaign teams can legally utilize Claude for drafting press releases, analyzing turnout data, preparing debate materials, and structuring voter outreach, Anthropic's updated Usage Policy strictly bans deepfake creation, automated social media astroturfing, impersonating election officials, and publishing deceptive content on pseudo-independent news sites.
