Anthropic has updated its Claude Code desktop application, introducing hierarchical session management and reusable workspace presets for software developers. Under the new architecture, a main parent session can split multi-part projects into nested child sessions. Each sub-session completes its designated assignment and feeds the final results back to the main thread, keeping intermediate tool outputs out of the primary transcript to maintain readability while relying on Git worktree isolation to avoid file collisions.

The redesigned desktop launcher enables engineers to save reusable environments incorporating multiple folders, SSH hosts, cloud virtual machines, containers, and development servers. An upgraded sidebar interface provides real-time oversight across parallel streams, categorizing sessions as active or waiting for input. It incorporates a live to-do list outlining planned execution steps, turn recap cards when Claude pauses, and a runtime side rail displaying real-time context window consumption and pending code diffs. A new /btw command opens side questions in dedicated tabs, and Claude can proactively suggest follow-up tasks that convert into independent sessions with one click.

The update is rolling out through the standard Claude desktop app for macOS and Windows, alongside a Linux version currently in beta. Access is available to subscribers on Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise tier plans.

For technical practitioners, these additions streamline concurrent developer workflows, such as writing feature code in one session while running tests or updating documentation in another. However, because each active stream draws against model rate limits, local disk space, and system memory, developers must carefully manage task boundaries, merge potential code branch conflicts, and review generated changes to avoid overwhelming their capacity for oversight.
