Anthropic Secures $45 Billion in Compute From Nscale

Anthropic has entered into a massive agreement to rent approximately $45 billion in artificial intelligence compute from Nscale, a British AI infrastructure startup founded in 2024. Under the six-year contract, Nscale will supply the AI safety lab with computing power generated from its flagship data center located in West Virginia. The infrastructure will leverage Nvidia's highly anticipated Vera Rubin chip system, which integrates six distinct chips to deliver cutting-edge processing capabilities. This massive compute capacity is scheduled to begin powering Anthropic's commercial services in late 2027.

The deal represents the latest and largest step in an aggressive, eight-month compute acquisition campaign by Anthropic as it battles rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Meta. Earlier this month, the company secured a six-year, $10 billion computing agreement with Volta, an AI cloud startup founded in January, utilizing a data center in Norway. In July, Anthropic finalized a $5 billion hardware deal with AMD. Prior to that, a May partnership with SpaceX granted Anthropic access to two data centers, yielding an estimated $1.25 billion in monthly computing capacity. Furthermore, in April, the startup expanded its partnerships with Amazon to gain five gigawatts of power, alongside expanded relationships with Google and Broadcom.

For AI practitioners and developers, this massive influx of hardware resources ensures that Anthropic can sustain the rapid scaling of its Claude model family. Access to Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin architecture starting in late 2027 means developers can expect significantly faster training times, lower latency, and more sophisticated reasoning capabilities in future model iterations. By locking down multi-gigawatt power commitments and state-of-the-art silicon years in advance, Anthropic aims to guarantee the infrastructure stability required to deploy next-generation frontier models without facing the hardware bottlenecks currently plaguing the industry.
