Amazon executive Panos Panay expects AI to replace apps
Amazon SVP Panos Panay outlined a vision for ambient computing at TechCrunch Disrupt, pitching new Bee wearables that process background data to reduce user reliance on traditional apps.

Amazon Senior Vice President of Devices, Alexa, and Leo Panos Panay outlined a shift toward ambient computing during an appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt on Thursday. Highlighting the company's new line of Bee hardware, Panay described a transition away from traditional smartphone interactions toward passive, background AI tools. The initial Bee lineup includes a wrist wearable that detaches into a pendant, as well as a credit-card-sized accessory designed to attach magnetically to the back of a mobile phone.
The new Bee devices constantly gather ambient audio and construct daily notes, extracting reminders, insights, and actionable tasks without requiring explicit prompt entry. To address privacy concerns, the hardware processes audio in real time and deletes the original sound files immediately after processing. Transcripts are locked using device-generated encryption keys, ensuring that neither outside parties nor Amazon personnel can read the logs unless explicitly shared by the owner.
Panay contrasted this continuous assistance with current smartphone habits, which he described as a rigid cycle of pointing, shooting, and returning to manual tasks. He argued that ambient devices allow users to remain present while delegating background organization to artificial intelligence. Instead of replacing smartphones outright, Panay envisions an interconnected system where an overarching intelligence layer links various form factors, diminishing the need to open standalone mobile applications.
According to the executive, who previously led Microsoft's Surface division for 19 years, a coming generation of users will expect hardware to implicitly comprehend their requirements rather than relying on discrete software applications. By embedding ambient sensors into daily hardware, Amazon aims to automate routine administrative tasks while prioritizing consumer data privacy through local security controls.
